TV Jab

This week Futurama returned from the cancellation hell that those idiots at Fox threw it into. The show has gained a huge following on Adult Swim since the cancellation, and is returning as a series of direct to DVD movies, and more episodes on Comedy Central in 2008.

“Bender’s Big Score” is their first feature length DVD…so…how does it stand up?

The Movie

I’m not even going to begin to recap the plot of the movie for you. I’ll hit a few highlights, but if you want to know the whole story, you’re going to have to buy the DVD.

The movie opens with a nice, stiff jab at Fox, then moves right into the plot. The gang all end up getting Spam after they give out their email addresses at a nude beach (you know, like you do). Also at the beach, they discover that Fry has a tattoo of Bender on his ass. The tattoo and the spammers lead to a time traveling adventure that covers thousands of years, and plays fan service to the audience like no money has ever done before.

Does anyone know a person who actually has a Nielsen box? I don’t. I’ve never met anyone that did. I would imagine they are all homes with older skewing audiences based on what I see in the Nielsen ratings every week. None of the shows that I, or anyone else that I know, watch are ever in the Top 10.

In fact, I can honestly say, I don’t watch a single program on this list. Do you?

1. Dancing with the Stars - Mon (ABC)
2. Sunday Night Football (NBC)
3. Dancing with the Stars - Tues (ABC)
4. Desperate Housewives (ABC)
5. NCIS (CBS)

So, just what is a show to do during the Writer’s strike if an episode runs short, since there is no writer to fill in the time with words? Well, “Moonlighting” had that exact problem during the last Writer’s strike in the 80s…and this is what they did….

Lost

I’ve been thinking a lot about this. As you’ve probably heard by now, Lost will be returning in January to continue with its fourth season. While it was originally slated for an abbreviated 16-episode season, the writer’s strike forced the producers into a bit of a dilemma…air the 8 episodes that are in the can, or hold off until the strike ends to air the full season. They chose to run the episodes they’ve already produced, and then will play in the remaining episodes later.

Basically, for a Lost fan, the situation sucks. With one option, we don’t get any new episodes for a long time. With the other option, we get a season much shorter than the producers intended. I’ve been trying to decide which I’d prefer, and I think I’d rather have no Lost than a shorter-than-intended Lost.

As with any other show, the writers had a specific arc in mind when they were writing this season. The fact that they are now having to cut that arc in half will surely severly cripple the story.

I would like to think that the producers care enough about the show to only send it to air if it’s ready, but I think we all know that those in the television industry are not always so cautious.

So what do you think? Should Lost go on with the show, risking a potentially shaky mini-season? Or would you rather wait for a later, more complete season?

FOX has released the details on their newest contest. It centers around Sarah Connor Chronicles, the forthcoming Terminator-based drama series.

Those of you with some sweet Photoshop skills may be able to put them to good use. On this site, you’ll find a whole host of resources to design a poster for the show. Everything from character shots to title cards to backgrounds are featured in these packages (which are huge…they average about 157 mbs…must be some MASSIVE pictures). FOX is asking you to use these to create a poster for the new series.

There are already some posters that they’ve featured, such as the one after the jump, due to some spoilers. So if you’ve always wanted to display your design prowess, now’s your chance. It could earn you a trip to LA to attend the premiere party! Read the rest of this entry »

The Peanuts classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas” airs tonight on ABC. I’m amazed at how early these Christmas Specials are running this year, but I’m always glad to see them.

Of course, A Charlie Brown Christmas will live on forever on DVD, but there is something special about watching it on television with your family - at least - there is for me.

The special first aired in 1965, and won both a Peabody and Emmy Award for the fantastic script written by Peanuts creator Charles Shultz. Ever since then it has been a mainstay of Christmas, and a special annual tradition for lots of families.

If you’re one of them, you’ll want to tune into ABC tonight at 8pm EST.

Could the Writer’s Strike almost be over?

Well, possibly. Insiders have spoken with both Deadline Hollywood, and AICN saying that a deal is basically “done” and that we could see work resume right after Christmas.

If this is true, we still might be able to get full season orders of most shows - and I think the announcement today that both “Life” and “Chuck” are getting full orders from NBC is probably a good sign that something positive is going on.

There are few shows from my childhood that I remember as fondly as American Gladiators. See, my brother was a sports nut - and I was much more into “sports entertainment” (that’s wrestling, folks), so we didn’t really watch many of the same programs…but American Gladiators was a combination of real sports competition, and the fun and showmanship of wrestling. It was a perfect hybrid that allowed us to come together and enjoy the hell out of the series.

On Jan. 6th, 2008 - the show returns, and it looks great. This promo is action packed, but doesn’t take itself too seriously…that’s exactly what we need for American Gladiators - I can’t wait.

NBC has picked up both “Life” the crime show about a detective who spent several years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, and “Chuck”, you know, that show show that comes on before Heroes, for a full 22 episodes each today.

That means, writer’s strike willing, we should get full first seasons of both of these shows. I know that there are fans of “Chuck” and “Life” roaming around the Bloggy Network. I haven’t gotten into either show myself, but from what I hear, they’re great.

About 8 million people a week are checking out the shows, giving them a solid foundation for continuing on for years to come.
