I never thought I’d say these words, but I like what Jeff Zucker is doing over at NBC.
Hang on…wait for the ground to stop shaking.
Okay. What I mean by that is…this advent of a 52-week, “rolling” program schedule is a great idea. Since the summer is usually a barren wasteland of reality unscripted programming (everyone’s calling it “unscripted” now…probably because “reality television” has become such a negative term), having a steady stream of decent shows could do wonders for the network.
I said all of that to say…ABC is drowning us with reality unscripted programming this summer…as in eight shows. The Bachelorette, featuring DeAnna Pappas, a scorned lover from last season’s Bachelor, debuts on May 19. Then, on May 26, The Mole returns. Personally, Mole has always been my favorite reality show. (Did you realize that Anderson Cooper was slumming it on The Mole back in 2001-2002 before he got all hoity-toity with CNN? Rags to riches…it’s the American dream.)
Next up is Wipeout, airing on June 24. Contestants “compete on an extreme obstacle course designed to provide the most crashes, face plants, impacts and wipeouts ever seen on television”…so it’s basically MXC, without the commentary, which is what actually makes the show funny. Airing on the same day is I Survived a Japanese Gameshow, which, I hope, is just an American version of this for half an hour.
Tired yet? I’m only halfway done.
In June, we get Hopkins and Dance Machine. Hopkins is a six-week mini-series documentary chronicling John Hopkins Hospital, which doesn’t sound to terribly bad. Dance Machine, on the other hand, is exactly what it sounds like…because we need more freaking dance competition shows. Then, starting on July 20, High School Musical: Summer Session starts up…which follows the audition process for the next phase of the hit HSM franchise. And finally, on July 21, it’s Wanna Bet, where celebrities bet on the results of “stunts, tricks and mental challenges that average Americans dream up and perform.” Seriously. It’s like America’s Got Talent’s younger, dumber cousin.
So there you go…bottom-of-the-barrel programming at its finest.
