Jimmy Fallon is getting ready to take over for Conan O’Brien as the redhaired one moves into the “Tonight Show” slot next fall. Before starting his show full time, however, Fallon will be practicing on NBC.com with a series of webisodes (i HATE that word) which will feature him behind the scenes in various club gigs.
It will also show us peeks into the creation of his new show, and hopefully give us an idea as to if he’s going to be any good at this.
The NBC late night situation continues to baffle many. Conan was promised the “Tonight Show” to keep him a few years back – but Leno has consistently dominated in the late night ratings since he took the chair from Johnny Carson in the 90s…and he’s not planning on leaving late night.
So Conan is probably going to be in deep trouble next fall. If Leno signs a deal with ABC or FOX, he’ll most likely blow Conan out of the water from day one – and leave NBC executives scratching their heads.
Back to Fallon, though, he’s planning a hipper show aimed at a younger audience. The producer of the program will be “Attack of the Show” producer Gavin Purcell (which is a terrible sign…because “AOTS” is almost completely unwatchable), and his house band is going to be a hip-hop band called “The Roots”. So….yeah.
Anyway – you can watch the late night train wreck begin tonight on NBC.com.
