TV Squad is reporting that The CW isn’t going to be allowing the press to view the new incarnation of “90210″ ahead of its 9.02.2008 premiere. The CW issued a full statement explaining their decision:
“The CW and our studio partner CBS Paramount Network Television have made the strategic marketing decision not to screen “90210″ for any media in advance of its premiere. We’re not hiding anything . . . simply keeping a lid on 90210 until 9.02, riding the curiosity and anticipation into premiere night, and letting all our constituents see
it at the same time.”
Now, some could speculate based on this bit of info that the show is just terrible and The CW doesn’t want the word getting out ahead of time. That may not be the case, however. It could simply be that they have something HUGE planned for the premiere and they don’t want it spoiled by various media outlets.
It may also be that many media outlets seem to be rather cynical when it comes to this show, and there’s really no reason for it. “90210″ is no different than any of the night time soaps from “Gossip Girl” to “Grey’s Anatomy” – the shows are a guilty pleasure. Sure, there are some that are more well written than others, but when it all comes down to it, a lot of times these shows catch flack from critics, while fans have a good time watching them and enjoy the programming.
So, let’s hold off on judgement until we have something to judge. This is a risky move for The CW. We’ll see if it pays off.
