2008 Super Bowl half time show slot has been filled with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers beating out acts like The Eagles in a “who can find the oldest band still touring” competition.
I kid. I like Tom Petty. Particularly as Lefty on “King of the Hill”, and I’m glad to see him score this high profile gig. The Super Bowl half time show still seems like it will never live down the 2004 incident with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake – which has apparently ruined the chances of current pop music EVER being on the Super Bowl stage again.
In an interesting side note, Tom Petty is a very vocal opponent of corporate sponsorship of music events. I’m sure he’ll be thinking about that when he steps on The Bridgestone Corporation stage and plays to 40 million people in January.

No offense but I miss the MODERN groups performing. My suggestions for artists to play at Superbowl Avril Levigne, Sum41, Sean Kingston , Kanye West,JayZ ,Rihanna and the list goes …BRING BACK THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS AND MIX THEM WITH THE OLDER GENERATIONS . Grow up and learn to spell. “Band” is a music group. To “ban” is to boycott. When you do, maybe we will consider your commentary. Until then, your judgement in music is equally in question with your education. Tom Petty is a critically acclaimed artist influencing decades both past and present. His still impressive popularity can be attributed to, not only to the obvious talent, but to his trans-generational longevity in this age of “One Hit Wonders.” A class in Music Appreciation and History (and maybe English) would serve you well.

The superbowl half time show can’t just cater to one group of people or one specifice music taste they have to try and find an act that the majority of the audience will know about and want to see and i definatly think that tom petty fits that description, its not all about what is modern, alot of people like the classics and wouldnt want to hear and it seems to me that your musical choices would only please one demographic of the audience that will watch the superbowl…… do you think that adults watching the superbowl would rather see jay Z then Tom petty? Personally, I enjoy it when the half-time show blends the classic with the new. Aerosmith and some popular boy band was great a few years back! Tom Petty is great, but I’d love to see a diverse group of musicians performing together. Mix it up. Tom Petty is great, but we need more spice!

Every commercial regarding American sport events in this century has at least 90% of the “Pop”, “R&B”, or “Hip Hop” culture theme to them.

I dunno…I liked the halftime show when Disney did it. It gives the children that are staying up something to look foreward to and you don’t have to worry if it will offend any age group. Pretty middle of the road stuff (I know…) but many older people do not know who these contemporary entertainers are anyway! I make a big celebration out of SB Sunday and have all age groups fired up for their favorite teams. Kids should be included also…even if most of them “Fall-Out” after half time and are asleep.

Alright Gokette! Look you guys, the committees who decide the half time show have, let’s say, a bit of experience. They know the demographics who pay the big dollars into their advertisers’ pockets, and this in turn dictates the agenda for the show. Basic economics.
By the way, a play of ANY Tom Petty single in my bar ALWAYS draws a sing-along crowd- big revenue generator, but then again, the Super Bowl people already know that.

Watch the halftime show! At first I didn’t know who Tom Petty was but I signed up to be a part of the halftime show anyways. Then when Tom came out during rehearsal and sang for us, OMGosh, I recognized every one of his songs! He rocks!! You will not be disappointed. Watch on SB Sunday!

OMG People get a grip!!! Stop!!! There is plenty of tastes out there and not enough time for all to be displayed at the Bowl….I do Agree that there should be more than just him. He is just fine and a legend but he is not my favorite, But that is all that has been disclosed. We don’t know WHO ELSE is there yet. Maybe it will be a surprise. I’m sure when they picked him to appear, they heard all the same comments from the people involved. So I’m sure there is more to it that just him.

OK, I loved when Aerosmith performe and the Rolling Stones, well, they are the Rolling Stones. But Tom Petty??? Come on!!!! The only song that is ever played is Free Falling which is one of my favorite songs ever but thats it. A lot of viewers are going to be dissappointed. THey need to get artists who appeal to all age groups and Tom Petty is definitely not one of them. I must say I am not looking forward to the halftime show once again

Call me a music snob, but I can’t believe some of these comments. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have influenced so many of the bands around today. So many of the bands, who will only dream of having the career longivity of TP. They are a solid good time rock band. If you’ve only heard “Free Fallin’” I feel bad for you. Expand your horizons, turn off American Idol and do some musicial research. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I think that the halftime show at the superbowl has been pathetic nearly everytime I have bothered to watch it. With the exceptions of a few great acts that I have seen including newer AND older bands and groups. Tom Petty is a pretty good act if I do says so myself. I think that one year, the promoters for the superbowl need to find a band (yes a band, not a bubble-gum pop/hip-hop act) that is really different. Get a attention getter. If the superbowl is worried about ratings, which they are, they need to grab attention and what better way to grab attention that to get an attention getter. Get a heavy metal or shock rock band to perform. Someone who is different. If I had to suggest someone for the halftime show it would be a good performer like Marilyn Manson, or Korn, maybe Slipknot to perform. It seems that everyone is into the horsecrap music that makes no sense, so no one would have the nuts to get performers like that.

just because there was one incident doesnt mean that it should ruin our halftime shows to be honest and i think others will agree there boring as heck how about they try something like they did the one year aerosmith and everybody preformed together it was old school plus new school and i think it was a pretty good job of mixing everyones taste in music but just beacause an incident that wasnt even that big of a deal we have to sit through old guys who cant sing anymore (thats just my opinion everybody has their own)

I personally liked last year with Prince and Florida A&M Univ.’s Marching 100… That was exciting and they always give a good performance! Tom Petty? c’mon now they could have atleast paired him with someone current so that there would be the best of both worlds. Maybe next year they’ll try harder.

Just finished “ENDURING” Tom Petty’s half time show.
Nevermind that he is a horrible choice, he can no longer put on a worthwhile show.
He looked ancient and his voice was thin and reedy. To the point where he had to use reverb effects to do his job during the high sustained notes in Free Falling.
The guy may have staying power and be enduring, but other than one decent album in the seventies and another two in ’89 and 91 he hasn’t done very much to impress.
It would not be difficult to come up with 50 choices that would be better. Hell, if you want old, Cheap Trick and Kiss were both available and have ten times the hits each compared to Petty.
I like Tom Petty, and if his performance had have had any energy in it at all I wouldn’t be writing this, but the guy was just going through the motions.
I personally feel that anyone doing the Super Bowl HTS ought to be able to fill a 70 000 seat stadium on their own merit. I doubt Petty could have done that at his peak in 1989.

I just got back from an all-college kids superbowl party. When Tom Petty was announced, we were all complaining, “who’s he, some geezer?” During the show, we realized that we had heard and enjoyed all the songs that were played. I would watch that again over any attention-deficit trashy hodge-podge of modern “pop” artists. Janet Jackson was an abomination, as was everyone who performed with her.

Tom petty played a big part in my younger years.He was hot back in the 80′s with aerosmith and led zepppelin was still rollin.Don’t forget Ted either!!!! Also petty was a huge lobbyist against the rise of ticket prices stating he wanted his ticksts to be cheaper so the younger clientel could afford them!!!!! Rock on!!!

I am 15 years old, and I hate all this new MODERN music! I hate how all these dopehead rappers get to live the American dream just by blabbering about sex and violence! & more importantly stuff that doesn’t make sense! I don’t care what you say TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS are the greatest band to ever roam this earth! I love Tom Petty! Wish he would tour again so I could see him! And if any of you don’t think he is good! then watch his documentary “Runnin’ Down A Dream”, and “The Live Anthology”, and just simply listen! He has some of the most pure, beautiful, and meaningful lyrics ever! Tom Petty can play anything and make it sound better! Especially alongside his badass guitarist Mike Campbell! and keyboardist Benmont Tench! By far three of the greatest musicians I know! Steve Ferroni is about the smartest black man I know too, he decided he was going to play good music, and not jabber about sex and violence! and to everyone else in the Heartbreakers, YOU GUYS ROCK!
