Happy Halloween! It’s that time of year again, and to celebrate, we’ve ranked the 10 Scariest TV Shows of ALL TIME….
10. Are you afraid of the Dark?

If you’re in your mid to early 20s, then you probably remember “Are you Afraid of the Dark?”. It was a show that first ran on Nickelodeon on Saturday nights. It was an anthology show that featured kids telling campfire tales as a framework for short scary stories. It was very much in the vein of Tales from the Crypt or the Twilight Zone, with a 90s, kid friendly spin…but it still scared the hell out of us here at TV Jab when we were but wee lads.
09. The Outer Limits

While the original Outer Limits was more of a “monster of the week” styled show, the remake, which ran from 1995 to 2002 introduced a more science related sci-fi that you normally see on television, and some of the show had truly frightening concepts. At 154 episodes, chances are, The Outer Limits is out there, “controlling the horizontal, and the vertical” on a television somewhere…right now…
08. Unsolved Mysteries

Unsolved Mysteries was a lot of things. Long before cable television took the concept of “reality television” and ruined it, Unsolved Mysteries could haunt your dreams with some of the most frightening tales of Ghosts and Alien encounters ever. What made them so terrifying?
They actually happened…
07. Most Haunted

Speaking of reality shows…there are very few that do “reality” right…but Most Haunted is one that’s pretty good at it. This british series follows a troop of ghost hunters to some of the “most haunted” (hence the title) places on earth. Sometimes there isn’t much going on, but most of the time, the show can be chilling, and very entertaining.
06. Masters of Horror

An hour long anthology series on Showtime that just recently aired, Masters of Horror took some of the top creators in the realm of horror, and let them run loose – doing basically whatever they please. The result was a mixed bag. Some shows were more funny than scary, but others were truly horrific and frightening.
05. Tales from the Crypt

Often funny, entertaining, and sometimes truly frightening, Tales from the Crypt is the rock with which many of the shows on our list was built on. The Crypt keeper will forever be a horror icon, and this show has to many great episodes to mention by name (that’s a top ten list in and of itself…hmmm)
04. Alfred Hitchcock Presents

The classic scares of this show will last forever. Alfred Hithcock was a master of suspense and terror, and some of the episodes of his show constantly delivered smart and chilling tales. As a kid it was the most terrifying portion of Nick at Nite, and it will always have a place in the TV scare hall of fame.
03. X-Files

The truth is out there…and it just might scare the hell out of you. The X-Files did a great job of being a mystery, a comedy (at times), and a fantastically scary show. What lurks out in the dark? We may never know, but this show has some great, and terrifying theories…
02. The Twilight Zone

Imagine if you will…a television show…so frightening…that it completely messed up generations of kids. The Twilight Zone is the standard with with all television horror must be judged against. Like most of the shows on this list, it could have its own Top 10 scariest moments…the show is a classic, with too many great episodes to name. It was filled with cautionary tales, and frightening situations.
The Twilight Zone was television at its finest.
1. Teletubbies

If you don’t agree this is the most terrifying television show of all time – then you haven’t watched it. These horrible creatures have televisions in their stomachs, and make disturbing noises that pass for language. They are a perfect example of children’s programming gone wrong, and are guaranteed to give any parent nightmares that they may never recover from.
I have never seen another show that I found as horrifying – nothing else has ever come close. This nightmarish thing deserves to be erased from television history all together. There’s no telling what its done to the children of the world who watched it.

Teletubbies are scary….what is scarier though is that a generation of children who watched the program and are now coming of age. That’s the really scary part. What will these demons do?

I loved the Twilight Zone. Teletubbies are not scary at all. A bit weird, but no weirder than some of the cartoons I’ve seen.

What, no Chiller Theater?? No Dark Shadows??!! Those two shows alone were scarier than any of the shows on your list!

I totally agree with the Teletubbies. They have done far more damage to children than any 3 of the other shows combined could ever dream of. The language is the worst part of it. I can’t believe there was a kids’ show with characters that spoke limited and incorrect English, GEARED TOWARD children who are learning to speak. Se Habla Retardo?? UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I don’t agree with the Teletubbies on the list. Well, actually, pre-fatherhood I would have with the whole sun-baby thing as a god figure and the weird social experiment setup in a bio-dome like place.
BUT, my son, 19 months, loves it, has started to learn to count already, I would say because of it, and has a HUGE vocabulary. Granted, he could be genius as it is, but by having cartoon icons that speak at the same level of the children they’re teaching to help them learn social and educational material, I think it does a wonderful job.

+1 on the Dark Shadows, definitely belongs on this list.
+1000 on taking off “Most Haunted” and putting in Ghost Hunters.
Ghost Hunters is like Oprah and Most Haunted is like Jerry Springer.
It’s definitely a matter of quality.

Twilight Zone is on the list…but what about the 1970’s Rod Serling contribution “The Night Gallery”?
It was darker than Twilight Zone…and creepier.

I hate when someone ruins a legitimate list by trying to slide something clever in, especially as the number one.. You capped a semi-serious list with a show for 2 year olds, way to go.

Most Haunted isn’t scary at all…it is just freakin’ hilarious!!! It is obviously fake. It definitely cannot compare to “GhostHunters” which makes reality of the paranormal. Now that is the creepiest show of all.

I am with the other ladies here….ghost hunters is TONS better because you know everything they show is real! on Most Haunted they are always shaking the camera around and saying “did you hear that?” or pretending to be possessed. Houdini is rolling around in his grave wishing he was alive to debunk these frauds! I just watch it every now and then when I want a laugh!

What about ‘V’, that freaked me out so much, reptilians hiding under human skin and invading so they could use us as a source of food!!!
OR what about battlestar Galactica with the planet of the insects episode, drugging humans after luring them to their planet and then putting the still alive humans in pods to be eaten alive by the insectoid larva…. I stil get nightmares about that one!
Good list, but drop the teletubbies one

I refuse to let my daughter watch this. She is very advanced in school because of not watching cr*p TV. Should be rated R to prevent children from being influenced by this demented trash.

Nice list, I’m 15 but remember “Are you afraid of the dark?” form my childhood. Nothing even compares.
I also love the twilight zone, The Howling Man is probably the most chilling television show I’ve ever watched.

Well see, the great thing about Teletubbies is that its
FOR CHILDREN! Kids..Babies…Toddlers. If that show scares you- being a grown adult and all…DONT WATCH IT. Its not MADE for you. I have yet to see a child who thinks Teletubbies is scary…and good for them because unlike you, they’re enjoying what is meant for them.
