This new fall season is brimming with science fiction. From Bionic Woman to Pushing Daisies, there is sci-fi all over the television these days. It’s finally gone mainstream…but sci-fi fans know that we’ve had great sci-fi programming almost as long as we’ve had televisions in our homes.
So, in honor of all these great years of sci-fi programming, we present to you…our Top 10 Greatest Sci-Fi Shows of All Time…
10. Babylon 5 – Centered around the Babylon 5 space station, a focal point for politics, diplomacy, and wars in the late 2250s and early 2260s, this series is often referred to as a “novel for television” because of it’s deep and engrossing storylines that played out over several seasons of the show.

09. Firefly – A “western in space”, Firefly was a short-lived television series that managed to established an amazingly detailed and rich world in only 13 episodes. The show developed a dedicated fan following that still work to get the series back on the air in some form to this day. The drive of the fans helped result in the feature film “Serenity” that completed the storyline from the series.

08. Battlestar Galactica – This reimagining of the classic (but cheesy) original Battlestar Galactica show took the world by storm with it’s post-9/11 commentary on terrorism and war. The shows borrows some of it’s visual style from Firefly and other shows, but features rich, and nail biting action, drama, and suspense.

07. Stargate: SG-1 – based on the hit movie “Stargate”, this series quickly expanded on the mythology that the move established, and developed an extensive universe, and – ultimately – built itself into a franchise that rivals any other sci-fi television series. Running for over 10 years, Stargate: SG-1 is one of the longest running sci-fi series in television history, and the series continues in direct-to-dvd movies.

06. Quantum Leap – In this highly successful series, Sam Beckett was a man lost in time, leaping from one life to the next, helping people, and hoping that the next leap…might be the leap home. He never did make it home, since the series ended without a series finale, but this engaging sci-fi series has been imitated time and time again over the years. The most recent mimic of the Quantum Leap premise is the new fall NBC series Journeyman…which is about a man who travels through time helping people…

05. Doctor Who - The longest running Sci-Fi series of all time is one of the most popular television shows in BBC history, and has recently found a growing fan base in the US. The series has been re-invented time and again, with 9 different actors playing the lead role of The Doctor over the life of the series…but the adventures of the time traveling alien from the planet Gallifrey never seem to get old…and will probaby be on television forever…

04. Star Trek – No television series has sparked the imagination of the world like Star Trek. The Original Series inspired not only generations of entertainers, but real scientists have brought many of the devices dreamed up by the Star Trek creative team to reality. That cell phone you have? Thank Star Trek. The doors at the grocery store? Thank Star Trek. The list goes on, and on, and on. 3 seasons of television changed the world…that’s the magic of Star Trek.

03. Lost - The recent resurgence of Sci-fi on network television can be traced right back to this series. Lost is an engaging mystery that continues to get more complex and more interesting with every season. The series follows a group of plane crash survivors on a mysterious island that is much more than it seems…

02. Heroes – Superheroes have never been done this well on TV — in fact, the only way to find superheroes written this well is to actually read the comic books. Heavily inspired by the newest generation of comic books, and largely staffed with comic book writers, Heroes has managed to take the sci-fi show into an entirely new direction. This show is still very young, and if the quality doesn’t continue, you’ll find it knocked off of this high perch in an instant, but for now…it is truly one of the best sci-fi shows of all time.

01. Star Trek: The Next Generation – While Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock may be cultural icons that will last forever, it is the second generation of Star Trek that was the most watch of all the Trek series. Star Trek: TNG first aired 20 years ago, and the series not only changed the way we thought about Star Trek, it changed the way we thought about sci-fi television. Most of the shows on this list (virtually everyone that started after TNG aired) owes their existence to the massive success of the crew of the Enterprise-D.
Not everyone will agree with this ranking, to be sure, but it’s massive appeal, incredible seven year run, and continued success on television (there is a minimum of 2 hours of Star Trek TNG on the air every single day of the week in the US), there is no other show that is more deserving of the top spot on this list.

So that’s it. Do you agree? Disagree? Sound off in the comments and let us know what you think!

Ok, of course these are just my personal biases, but I would have thrown out the original Star Trek, and would have moved Firefly way up on the list. That SG-1 is ahead of two smarter shows like Firefly and BSG rubs my geek-dar the wrong way.
Also, what about V?

If you left out Heros, Lost, Quantum Leap, and Battlestar Galactica you’d have a good start.
I’d also move Babylon 5 and Firefly closer to the #1 position. Firefly was under rated and Babylon 5 was far superior in plot complexity and uniformity to any of the others. It also were in to areas that any of the StarTreks feared to go until after B5 did it.

Heroes better than Babylon 5?
Lost better than Firefly?
I you are talking about the best SF series, the order is absolutely wrong.

The take of a geek female:
5. ST:Voy
4. BSG
3. Firefly
2. Lost
1. ST:TNG

I also disagree with the order. My top ten, using these choices, in descending order of personal opinion of greatness:
1. BSG (The best writing on television, period.)
)
2. ST:TNG (Made possible all SF that followed.)
3. B5 (Oh, that’s what an arc is supposed to look like!)
4. Star Trek (Important for its time, as it spoke about the issues in a language that made it palatable.)
5. Firefly (I might have rated it higher if there had been more episodes . . . alas.)
6. Quantum Leap (Reminded us of what we’ve gained and what we need to keep, culturally, socially, ethically.)
7. Stargate SG-1 (Thematically, this show was about what, exactly? Not that I don’t own all the DVDs.
8. Heroes (Not as densely packed as BSG, and the stakes just aren’t as high. Not that I didn’t rush out and buy season one two days ago. But I bet it will pick up in season two.)
9. Doctor Who (The histrionics are a little much, even for a science fantasy show.)
I don’t feel comfortable rating Lost, as I haven’t seen enough of it.

How are you defining sci fi? I’ve seen several lists over the years that have included shows like Alias, Buffy TVS, Angel, etc. but then they aren’t mentioned in others at all.
Drakkenfyre

Yeah, good point. S:AAB really was one of the best SF shows of all time. It also took on some of the big issues, but I wonder if some people weren’t ready for that dark a tone. Even now, I still have the VCR tapes, but I can’t bring myself to watch them again, knowing what happens in the end. I would have loved to have seen more of that show.
I liked that geek female list, and I absolutely loved Voyager, but it was hot and cold. When it was hot, it was tackling suicide and identity and the rights of the individual versus those of the group, and when it was cold it was baby-making lizards or Seven dating Chakotay.

My List would be:
1. BSG (Greatest television show…period!! No other show does drama, action and suspense like this does! I can watch the pilot/mini-series over and over and over again! Characters are very real, complex and tormented.)
2. Star Trek. TNG and those that came after (I’ve watched every episode of TNG, DS9 and Voyager and can honestly say that…for the first time, i can’t reach a decision on which is better!! I lost interest in ST Enterprise after the first few episodes and i can’t say i’ve watched the original series even though Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country are two of my all time fav movies. Okay…if i have to choose it would have to be TNG.)
3. B5. Great story! Strong characters. Do i really need to say anything else?
4. SG-1. We can get technical all we like but it’s an entertaining and good show
I’m not comfortable rating the others. I’ve never seen quantum leap, Dr. Who (yeah…i know…) or Firefly (thoroughly enjoyed Serenity) and have seen only Season 1 of Lost. I’ll get back to you on Heroes once i receive Season 1 (bought it this week)

I think this is a good list. i defiantely agree that NG deserves to be up there. Also despite what anyone else thinks, I would stargate sg-1 in the top spot, then STNG, then BSG. I also would not put heroes ont he list.

These lists are so personal, there’s never, ever… a last word. I’m happy to see that the comments are mostly about sharing lists/favorites and not flaming about something as benign as a fav list.
Here are my personal favs:
1. Star Trek: TOS
2. Stargate SG-1
3. Sliders
4. The 4400
5. Heroes
6. The Twilight Zone
7. Smallville
8. Land of the Lost (Yup:-) The Saturday morning kid’s show
9. X-Men – The Animated series (arguably the best overall job on an animated series)
10. Stargate Atlantis (though season 4 is dragging, getting very soft)
Notes:
Kyle XY – The first 1.5 seasons have been excellent (except for the activist encumbered gay episode). Hope they don’t mess this series up.
The Pretender – probably not classic Sci-Fi. Deserves a mention every now and again.
I know there’s alot of enthusiam on the internet for both Firefly and Battlestar Galactica – but I can’t stand either of these two – no offense to anyone. Like I said… matter of personal preference. Quantum Leap is entertaining but would always end up somewhere in the middle of any large list I put together (not the greatest but not the worst). On a larger list, I’d place Star Trek: Voyager over TNG. TNG over Deep Space 9.
Cheers!

3. Lost (1st season)

Pretty tragic that Farscape doesn’t even get an honorable mention. I love sci-fi and Farscape was more enthralling than anything I’ve seen on TV to this day.
I think SG1 should be bumped up, and it just seems way too early to be placing heroes so high up the list.

Brimstone starring Peter Horton and John Glover as the Devil terrific premise terrific writing makes a lot of these so called mystery sci-fi shows on tv now look wussy should lasted longer I think it could’ve become one of the all time greats

I the title is the top 10 modem SF rather than the top SF shows of all time. Where is Irvan’s great TV shows like “Lost in Space”, “Land of the Giants”, “Time Tunnel” and “Voyage to the bottem of the Sea”? Also, Planet of the Apes TV servies was good. I am surprise that StarGate Atlanitis is not on there. I think “Lost” should not be in there. I do not look at that as SF show but more of a drama (with SF elements on the side).

Can we draw a line between Sci-Fiction / WitchCraft and Horror, and exclude shows like Charmed, Buffy, Angel and their spin offs.
Sci-Fiction to most fans would I’m sure have a space theme.
#1 all time is now Battlestar Galactica. Have been a fan since episode 1 season 1, and got hooked instantly by great writing, cast, direction and camera work. I still love Sci-Fi in general, but this show has won me.
I need go no further as what ever I say is only my opinion anyway.
BTW, I like Buffy, but think it’s catergoised incorrectly.

I’d have put Babylon 5 much higher in the list.
so many series (SF and mainstream) owe their existence to this groundbreaking show.
The season arc concept is a case in point, only after Babylon 5 came out did DS9 start it’s own version of the arc, and other series began to follow suit, whereas many shows were a lot more episodic in nature with an occasional reference to a back story.
We’re always told, in English Lit. ir creative writing, that a good story has a Beginning, a Middle and an End. Babylon 5 had all of those. It was designed that way from the ground up.
I’m still a bit miffed at Warner Bros for fucking it all up by forcing JMS to shoe-horn the last two years of his epic into a single season – that was a low blow by WB I think.
Anyway, other faves include Firefly [excellent writing], SG1, BSG and Heroes.

Where is Farscape? You are joking: heroes in top 10?
Star Trek enterprise is also very good.
From my point of view, the best series is Babylon 5.

1. SG-1 (longest sci fi show ever, that must say something. Plus 3 spinoff show after the movie).
2. Star Trek Voyager (is there anyone sexier than 7of9)
3. Battlestar Galactica (original series)
4. Voyagers (time travel, one season because the actor died)
5. Quantum Leep

What are thinking? Battlestar Galactica is by far the best series ever! It challenges it’s viewers. It has amazing writing, music, CGI and actors. They actually believe in character development! It has re-invinted sci-fi as we know it and made it into something great. It is crime not to have it has number 1.
In addition, to even put shows like Heroes and Lost on the list is insulting. It is not true sci-fi. And what about shows like Space: Above and Beyond and the Twilight Zone?
I am curious, do you even like or watch sci-fi?
nathaniel
May 11th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I feel doctor who should have been much higher- the way it makes the viewers think is great, the science is very accurate, and it makes the viever emotional (rose tyler trapped forever, the doctor being reminded of the fact that people die for him, etc.) it is very memorable and it is very rare to find someone who does not like it. to me, it will always be the best Tv show ever!
p.s. the history of the “whoniverse” goes like this:
the dark times
creation of earth
human evolution
2009
aliens proved to be real
1st human empire
2nd,3rd and 4th human empires
dalek and cyber wars
end of earth
colonisation of new earth
end of the universe

Heroes as #2? HA! I understand that this list was created a while ago. And THAT’S why you you don’t count your chickens before they hatch. To be a great TV series it has to stand the test of time. Which Heroes obviously did not do. Where are X-Files and Twilight Zone???

I’m glad Babylon 5 made it on the list, but I think it deserves a higher spot than Heroes and Lost considering neither are even technically scifis and B5 practically INVENTED the overarching storyline theme that many shows imitate nowadays (including Lost and Heroes).
The show is often an underrated classic that is misunderstood by 50 percent of viewers and embraced by 50 percent of other viewers — that’s often why it’s described as “arguably” the greatest scifi show of all time. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea though since it is largely devoted to dialogue and an intensely intricate plot rather than explosions and constant action — this is also what separates viewers’ opinions on this show.
It’s basically a love it or hate it kind of show depending on if you’re watching TV for “mindless” entertainment or for quality story and characters. Just my opinion though

wth. okay, this list was made some time back, but even then heroes is something that cant really be considered #2 material. Specially not now, it has plumetted to all sorts of depths.
how come i never see any love for ST:DS9. Imo it was amazing, a nice departure from STs otherwise travelling ship series (which were great) into a more political sci-fi theme.
Ben

I don’t get this. This list is pure crap. It should be taken off or at least remade. Who actually contributed to making this list? Most of the comments here are disagreeing with it. So wtf. Seriously.
SG1 should be way higher. Heroes shouldn’t be that high. Farscape should be here. Here is my lsit, cos it makes more sense.
1: Doctor Who (THE longest running SF show EVER!!!)
2: Stargate SG-1 (for obvious reasons)
3: Farscape
4: Star Trek (not any particular series, just generally Star Trek)
5: Lost
6: Stargate Atlantis
7: Battlestar Galactica
8: Sliders (as short as it was, it deserved a few more seasons, the idea was there.)
9: Flash Gordon (I mean, come on! Not a single mention here?!?!)
10: Torchwood (cos its just great)
If there was a number 11, then this is where Heroes would come in. Heroes needs at least 2 more seasons before it can be moved up or down.

LOST IN SPACE a classic of sci fi series campy but fun BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY those STARFIGHTERS used by EARTH DIRECTORATE were cool
Boy Wonder
August 17th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
I agree on the old Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon Serial. No top ten sci-fi list is worth considering without their mention.
I’m not much of a Sci-Fi fan but I do like Space themed shows so:
(I can’t order them really but I mention those I like)
Flash Gordon. Light and fun, and I suppose Sci-Fi in its day.
Star Wars Original Trilogy. Unless only TV series are allowed.
Buck Rogers in the 25th C. Erin Gray made it sexy, and it was fun.
Star Trek TNG,DS9 and VOY. Same world. Three series.
Star Trek TOS. No list is complete without it.
Babylon 5. For Season 1-3, when good, it’s very potent.
The original BG. Was more fun than the new.
V. God knows why, but it’s what grew up with.
And to complete the list mention must be made of a number of popular shows that for various reasons I personally can’t abide.
Dr Who.
Stargate.
Farscape.
Firefly.
BG (The new one)
X-files
Star Trek Enterprise.

ummmmm how is heroes supposed to be #2? the stupidest show ever that is completely predictable, bad storytelling, many time-line gaps and they just put everything in and out randomly xD not to mention their acting
i didnt watch many sci-fi’s so i cant even make a top-10 list xD
but my top 1 is Lost
Mike
September 12th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Here is my list.
1. Farscape (Hands down #1 in my book. Brilliant setting, the inning is genius and the characters are just to die for and its sexy and funny. Their is not a single episode that i would take away and that is uncommon. The only complaint is the time travel aspect, but its not a big part of it s0 i dont really mind.)
2. The 4400 (Just like BG it brings many elements like Politics and Religion etc, this gives it a great backbone. Complaint, that they didnt test that powers were safe before that start using them, like say Shawn’s power. But not a big deal.)
3. Startrek TNG (I usually like serieses to have a better story joining episodes together. But it gets a 3rd place. Great characters, like the enemy’s. The setting is fine, not great but fine.)
4. Lexx ( I know its a shame to have it this high, but i love it. Its sexy, have a steady storyline and it’s funny. I havent got any complaints really)
5.6. Battlestar G (New, great ground work. Brilliant settings, like that the politics are all messed up. Sadly i found it boring after the 2nd series.)
5-6. Eureka (Its charming, geeky, loses some points in that they use to much high tech stuff and much of it is impossible So its half in half sci fi/fantasy and im a man who like his Sci fi at least 500m away from fantasy and vice versa. Also they just junked a part of the story line.)
And in not particular order 7-10
Jeremiah (Hate the religious nonsense, like the style over all)
The Pretender (Not really sci fi but kind of, love the style. Hate the new age stuff and the bogus conspiracy things. But besides that i like it.)
Sliders (Not all that great, if it werent for the great characters and how fun Jerry O’Connell is i pro wouldnt have watched it, i like it in a B film type way as well, kinda like they did it on a budget and gave it a good go.)
Look at that, not a single oldie, well i must not be thinking hard enough but thats sort of my list. If it were films or books instead it would be vice verca. The only once im really sure of are Farscape and the 4400.

Firstly, I think we need to establish that the superhero genre and the scifi genre are NOT the same. Shows like Heroes and, in some of the comments, Smallville and X-Men, simply don’t belong in a sci fi list.
Second, Lost isn’t sci fi either. Conspiracy shows and monster shows aren’t sci fi. X Files might be the only exception to this rule, as they veered into science fiction on occasion. But still it’s only part time sci fi.
Third. Firefly is awful. Just awful. I still don’t understand how it’s small, yet inexpliciably rabid, fanbase has decided it’s the greatest sci fi show of all time. Still, it actually IS sci fi, which would put it higher on the list than Heroes or Lost.
Fourth. Flagrant Omissions…Sliders. The first two seasons showed how much fun you could have with a tiny budget and an old remote control. Max Headroom. Possibly the most imaginative thing ever to have come from a former marketing tool and fake VJ. Alien Nation. Lost in Space. I could go on. All the shows I mentioned could easily replace Lost, Heroes, Firefly, Even Quantum Leap, which really is borderline.
But if you are just talking about the shows on the list, and excluding Lost and Heroes for being non qualifiers, then flip Babylon Five and Firefly and you might be close to the truth.

Battlestar Galactica is undoubtfully the best sci-fi show I’ve seen. Although must admit the last season seems to be made in rush. Pity.
so, my list:
1. BSG
2. Farscape
3. SG 1
As for star trek series, I’ve seen most of them, but can not bear it’s “idiotic kindness”. What the matter with those guys, can they kill anybody not by accident?

Agree with Aaron for sci fi definition, lost is alright and heroes is awesome but wouldn’t call either a sci-fi. 4400 is a much better trade out for heroes (and fits pretty legit into sci fi genre). I got given the Dr who series and while I watched them have to say that with a few REALLY good exceptions most of the story lines are so juvenile and predictable it almost put me off it completely, think it deserves a 9 at best. Those of you who said torchwood… well I’m not going to say your opinion is wrong but here’s a little challenge for you: find someone who has never seen the show (or dr who) before, tell them what it is about and if they don’t insult you for watching crap when you finish I will admit I am wrong =)
Apart from that pretty good list, no idea about your bottom 3 (never seen them before) but if you swap out lost for stargate atlantis, heroes for 4400 move dr who to 9 and maybe go a little less trek heavy (sg-1 isn’t consistent but s7 kicks the ass of any trek season) I would call it spot on =)

The inclusion of Heroes (somehow at number 2, even though everything after the first season was garbage)
+
The exclusion of Farscape (seriously, you must not have watched it. Its like Firefly but better and with Muppets)
=
This list is bullshit

X-Files, BSG (2003) and Millennium are the best I have ever seen in the sci-fi genre. All the three are thought-provoking, mind challenging, they raise questions and moral dilemmas and require from the audience to think. I would also include Angel but I don’t know if it can be called sci-fi

My top ten would have to be;
1. Star Trek ( all except Enterprise)
2. BSG (Original)
3. Stargate (All except Universe)
4. Red Dwarf
5. Blake’s Seven
6. V (New)
7.Firefly
8. Chuck
9. Quantum Leap
10. Andromeda
P.S. Definately agree with what’s been said about Lost not being a Sci fi and think Dr. Who shouldn’t make the cut even of it is the longest running sci fi it is boring and repetitive.

Came across this while searching for other stuff and all I can say is WOW! Who’s the lame ass numb nuts that came up with this list? It’s obvious that you don’t really have a grasp of REAL Sci-Fi. I mean Heroes and Lost? Are you for real?
V (original from 80’s) It was the first and extended version of “Independence Day”, another “what if” scenario. I never watched it really, but it deserves to be on the list.
Here’s my opinion on how this list should have read;
1) Star Trek (Original) without which all the other shows would never have been created, as well as a TON of the electronic and technical goodies we take for granted today!
2) BSG (Original) because regardless of its flaws and quirkiness for the time, it was the first to address the age old question… where did we come from, how did we get here? The new version was so twisted and fucked up from the original, it wasn’t worth watching.
3) Doctor Who, simply because it’s been around longer than all the rest, some Doctors were far better than others and Tom Baker was not only the longest running Doctor in the series, but still remains to this day (for long time fans since the beginning) the all time favorite and best.
4) Babylon 5, simply the greatest written Sci-Fi period! No other show has been able to match the quality of storyline and character development like this show did, not even Star Trek.
5) ST:TNG, like a fine wine, it got better with age and like B5, surpassed everyone’s expectations.
6) Space:1999 (Season 1 only) another “what if” look into our future. Too bad the writers, studio and producers fucked it all up after season 1.
7) ST:DS9, simply because it was a well done “continuation” of TNG within the same astral time period. All the other spin offs should’ve been called ST:TQFMM (Star Trek: The Quest For More Money). They were okay in their own rights to some degree but lacked anything as solid as the original TNG. Enterprise was disgusting, period. Each time a franchise goes backwards in time they keep making the technology better than what it was in the original! Star Wars did the same thing sort of, but not as blatant as ST and new BSG did.
9) Stargate SG1 (earlier seasons) good continuation of the movie
10) Flash Gordon (original) for those of us old enough to remember it.
