Due largely to the Sarah Palin impressions on SNL which put her in a brighter spotlight than ever before, Tina has reached out to a whole new audience with her comedy.

Tina Fey is no stranger to us, though. We’ve seen her in two feature films, on “30 Rock”, and as one of the lynch pins of “SNL” as both a writer and performer.

Now, the Associated Press has named her “Entertainer of the Year”. (I would quote them – but you know how they feel about that. No sense in getting the blog sued, or deep-linking to one of their own articles, which would help it not only in search results, but also in general traffic. Instead, we’ll just mention them that once, and be done with it).

That’s a pretty high honor in a year when Heath Ledger gave an awe-inspiring performance in “The Dark Knight”, and Robert Downey Jr. redefined what a super hero can be.

Now – if people would just start watching “30 Rock” – everything would be great.

If you’ve ever seen or heard “Star Trek”, then you know who Majel Barrett-Roddenberry is – whether you realize it or not. She was the voice of the ships’s computer in every incarnation of the “Star Trek” franchise – even the fan film series “Star Trek: Phase II”.

She passed away yesterday at her home after a short battle with leukemia.

Majel played numerious roles on “Star Trek” from the very beginning of the series when she was cast as the first officer named “Number One”. Through the original series she played Nurse Chapel, and in the Next Generation Era she was Luwaxana Troy. Each character engaging and fun.

More than that, though, she was considered by many as “The First Lady of Star Trek”. Those of us here at TV Jab send our thoughts and prayers to her family, specifically her son “Rod”. It is our belief that she is “boldy going” to a better place, and we wish her well.

I feel like a kid again. Seriously.

I was 11 or so during the first “Late Night” wars – and having always been a night owl, I was a huge fan of Johnny Carson at that age. I loved the show – and I loved David Letterman as well. Sure – I didn’t always get the jokes, but I really enjoyed those shows, and it was fascinating to me to see what happened behind the scenes.

Watching the HBO movie about that event gave me a look into that world, and now with the Internet, we can kind of see it more transparently than we could back then. What we’re seeing right now has completely blown my mind. Jay has been give a prime time show on NBC that will come on directly before Conan’s “Tonight Show” 5 days a week.

That’s unprecedented, and a brilliant move on NBC’s part. It gives the network an amazing number of options that they wouldn’t have had if Jay had left for another network.

First, now Conan won’t have to be competing against him…which would have probably killed Conan anyway. Second, they now still have Jay if Conan’s “Tonight Show” fails miserably.

What really makes it interesting though is how everyone must feel behind the scenes. How does Conan feel? Betrayed? Relieved? A little of both? What about Jimmy Fallon (who is taking Conan’s spot on “Late Night”)? Does this ad even MORE pressure to him…or does this make him the new Carson Daily? (there’s irony there my friends).

There are just SO many questions to be answered. This is an interesting move by NBC, and it has me more fascinated with their Late Night line-up than I have been in years.

How about you?

Jimmy Fallon is getting ready to take over for Conan O’Brien as the redhaired one moves into the “Tonight Show” slot next fall. Before starting his show full time, however, Fallon will be practicing on NBC.com with a series of webisodes (i HATE that word) which will feature him behind the scenes in various club gigs.

It will also show us peeks into the creation of his new show, and hopefully give us an idea as to if he’s going to be any good at this.

The NBC late night situation continues to baffle many. Conan was promised the “Tonight Show” to keep him a few years back – but Leno has consistently dominated in the late night ratings since he took the chair from Johnny Carson in the 90s…and he’s not planning on leaving late night.

So Conan is probably going to be in deep trouble next fall. If Leno signs a deal with ABC or FOX, he’ll most likely blow Conan out of the water from day one – and leave NBC executives scratching their heads.

Back to Fallon, though, he’s planning a hipper show aimed at a younger audience. The producer of the program will be “Attack of the Show” producer Gavin Purcell (which is a terrible sign…because “AOTS” is almost completely unwatchable), and his house band is going to be a hip-hop band called “The Roots”. So….yeah.

Anyway – you can watch the late night train wreck begin tonight on NBC.com.

In 2007 Oprah Winfrey told Larry King that in 2011 she was “done” with her daytime talk show. Well, according to TV Squad that’s apparently no longer true. When she was talking to Access Hollywood and asked about it her response was “I’m not done”.

So what does that mean?

Well, she’ll be launching the “Oprah Winfrey Network” with Discovery in the not-to-distant future. It’s highly likely that she’ll be either moving her show to that network, or that she’ll be creating a new show for the network. Either way, it seems inevitable that she’ll be moving herself to her own cable space.

You know – kind of like Howard Stern did with satellite radio. Anyone remember how that turned out?

Disney has upped their orders for the latest seasons of their tween-magnet programs. In an effort to get as much out of Miley Cyrus as they can before she gets to old and is no longer welcome at the “House of Mouse”, the company has upped the episode order of “Hanna Montana” to 30 episodes this season.

Now, it’s not completely uncommon for kids shows to get at larger than 24 episode per season order, but it is obvious that Miley is getting older, and the older she gets, the less likely it is that she’ll remain the “queen of tweens”, so it’s not surprising that Disney is pumping the “Hanna Montana” well dry while it still can.

Also of note, “The Suite Life on Deck” the latest incarnation of the “Zack and Cody” franchise, has had its episode order upped as well. Again — they’ll only be young for so long.

Rosie O’Donnell (you remember her right? At one point she was dubbed “The Queen of Nice” – then she took a terrible heal turn and because “the great queen bitch monster”) attempted to resurrect her career on NBC last week with a special called “Rosie Live”.

I think the Variety review of this thing sums it up best: “If Rosie O’Donnell and company were consciously determined to strangle the rebirth of variety shows in the crib, they couldn’t have done a better job of it than this pre-holiday turkey.”

Needless to say, word is now coming out that the show did not generate high enough ratings to become a series. Apparently this thing was also supposed to serve as a back-door pilot. 5 million viewers, though, is not even close to enough to support a network show.

Variety show fans need not worry, however, as both FOX and CBS will be attempting to revive the genres next year. FOX is planning a variety show starring the Osbournes, and CBS is hoping that John Mayer will kick start the revival of the format.

No one is sure if either of those projects will get variety shows back on the air, but one thing is certain…Rosie won’t.
