David E. Kelly told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that “Boston Legal” only ended this season because “ABC didn’t want us back.”
Kelly tells the paper that they had to fight to even get a 13 episode 5th season to wrap the show up. “Boston Legal” was never a huge ratings success, but the show did ok, and was praised by critics. It won several Emmys, most notably for William Shatner.
The two hour finally saw two weddings – one with Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) and Carl Sack (John Larroquette) finally getting together. The other wedding was between Alan Shore (James Spader) and Denny Crane (William Shatner). The two married so that Alan could legally care for Denny like a spouse as Alzheimer’s takes him in the near future, and in turn, Denny can give his fortune to Alan with no problems.
It was a clever, and a appropriate ending for the show. If you missed “Boston Legal” during its run you can catch it on the ION network, and the DVDs are available as well. It’s well worth watching.

Brenda Strong may be the voice of “Desperate Housewives” as Mary Alice, but she likes to to be on screen every now and again too.
To that end, Strong has agreed to appear on “Boston Legal” as a judge who presides over one of Crane, Poole & Schmidt’s big cases. According to TV Guide’s exclusive report the episode shoots this week.

This breaks my heart.
Among the many announcements at today’s ABC upfronts was this little nugget…the 2008-09 season of Boston Legal will be its last. The announcement was pretty much an accident…ABC President Steve McPherson was discussing the deal with Life on Mars when he said that Legal head David E. Kelley would “write pretty much every [episode] of the final season of ‘Boston.’”
Despite the critical acclaim that it received, BL’s just never been able to find a solid audience. I hate to see it go.

ABC has granted the legal dramedy a fifth season, Variety is reporting.
What’s interesting is the way that the renewal came around. Despite having received multiple Emmy’s and critical acclaim, it doesn’t have a huge viewership, and is somewhat on the bubble. Now, ABC is wanting to go ahead with “Life on Mars”, a drama that is being adapted from a BBC version, but David E. Kelley, showrunner of Boston Legal, owns the rights. As part of his agreement give ABC the right to go ahead, Kelley negotiated the return of Legal. At least that’s what I make of it from the article.
Regardless of how it happened, it happened. I’m thrilled to see it back.
