TBS has renewed “The Bill Engvall Show” for a third season, and I have to say – I couldn’t be happier.
Bill Engvall is a guy who’s stand up I’ve always found moderately entertaining, but he’s never been the kind of comedian that I’ve sought out. As my daughter gets older, however, I have found that about 90% of the stuff running on television past 7:00 pm is completely inappropriate for her, and cannot be watched until she goes to bed.
With that in mind, one evening I put on “The Bill Engvall Show”, not expecting to finding anything too exciting. What I found, though, was a sitcom about an actual family that has managed to stay married, and are raising kids together. The show isn’t filled with sex jokes or inappropriate content…it is a throwback to the sitcoms of old.
Engvall brings back memories of “The Cosby Show”, “Home Improvement”, and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” to some extent. It is a classic styled sitcom – and it is every bit as funny and entertaining as any of the shows I just mentioned.
I mean that.
The show doesn’t try to “push the envelope”, it isn’t designed to “make you think”, and it doesn’t try to beat you in the face with a “message”or political view point. It it simply a very well done, enjoyable to watch, family sitcom.
We could use a few more Bill Engvalls on our television.

Current Jenny Craig pitchwoman Valerie Bertinelli just might be returning to television sitcoms soon. TBS has tapped the actress to star in a new series from “The Bill Engvall Show” creator Dave Caplan. Caplan is also responsible for “George Lopez” and “The Drew Carey Show”.
In the new pilot, Bertinelli will be playing the role of a single mother raising two kids. It’s an interesting twist for her since her career started on “One Day at a Time” where she played the teenaged daughter of a single mother raising two kids.
I’m actually a big fan of “The Bill Engvall Show” for a couple of reasons.
1) I can actually watch it when my daughter is in the room.
2) It’s a welcome throwback to the way sitcoms used to be.
While I do love that television has evolved and shows like “Lost”, and “The Office” are doing things differently than TV did them 10 or 20 years ago – it is nice to be able to sit down and watch a classic-styled sitcom that doesn’t star kids on the Disney Channel.
So, I will definitely be checking this one out if it makes it to series.
